Documents merged together tend to pick up duplicates: the same attachment included twice, a page the scanner ran over again, two revisions spliced into one file. This tool finds duplicate pages by comparing text content and keeps the first occurrence. The comparison is textual, so scans are out of scope. Pages with no text layer (scans, full-page images) do not take part in the comparison — deliberately: treating them as “all the same” would reduce a 100-page scanned contract to a single page without raising a single error. They are left untouched instead, and the output tells you how many pages could not be compared. Every removed page is listed, with the page it duplicated, because “looks identical” is not the same as “should be deleted” — repeated blank pages in a contract or a repeated chapter in a book can be intentional. The original file is never modified, so you can always check the list and start over. Layout (fonts, positions, images) plays no part; only the text is compared. Two pages with the same words in different layouts count as duplicates — which is usually exactly what you want.
Features
- Finds duplicate pages by text content and keeps the first occurrence
- Lists every removal: which page went, and which page it duplicated
- Pages with no text layer (scans, full-page images) are left alone and reported separately
- A wholly scanned document gets a clear “cannot compare”, rather than a bare “no duplicates found”
- Page order is preserved — removing duplicates does not reshuffle the rest
- The original file is untouched, so a wrong removal is easy to undo
- Nothing is uploaded and no server is involved
How to use
- Drop in the PDF you want to clean up
- The tool extracts text page by page and compares; the output names the pages it removed
- Check that list to confirm they really were duplicates
- Download the result; if something was removed wrongly, open the original and start again
FAQ
- How does it decide two pages are duplicates?
- It extracts each page’s text layer, normalises runs of whitespace, and compares pages; identical text means a duplicate, and the first occurrence is kept. Normalising whitespace is necessary because the same text exported twice can carry different indentation and blank lines, and without it you would miss duplicates. Case and punctuation are left alone — those are part of the content, so `Hello` and `hello` are not the same page.
- Why did it remove nothing from my scanned PDF?
- Because the comparison is textual, and a scan has no text layer (each page is one image with no searchable text). Pages without a text layer are treated as not comparable and kept as they are. If most of the document is like that, the tool says plainly that it cannot compare, rather than reporting “no duplicates found” — the latter is a confident answer about something it never looked at. Handling scans needs image comparison, which is a different tool.
- Could it delete a page it should not?
- Possibly, which is why every removal is listed. The judgement uses text only, not layout: two pages with the same words but different layouts or images (the same disclaimer with a different photo, say) count as duplicates. “Looks identical” and “should be deleted” are not the same thing — repeated blank pages in a contract and repeated chapters in a book can both be deliberate, so check the list before using the result. The original file is never modified, so a mistake just means opening it and trying again.
- Which copy is kept?
- The first occurrence. Duplicates from merging are usually the same material included twice, and the earlier copy tends to be in the preceding document, which is the more natural position. Keeping the later one would move pages that should appear in the middle towards the end.
- How is this different from “PDF Organize”?
- That one deletes by page number — use it when you know which pages to drop. This one finds the duplicates — use it when you do not know, or cannot be bothered to page through. Both remove pages; the difference is who decides. Here the tool decides, which is exactly why you should check the list. For blank pages that came through the scanner both work, but deleting by page number in PDF Organize is more precise.
