Grid Paper Maker

Five kinds of paper, each for a real job: square grid for drawing and tables, ruled for writing, dot grid for drawing where you want a reference without the noise of full lines, and tian and mi writing grids for practising Chinese characters (the first divides each square into four, the second adds both diagonals for eight reference directions). Sizes are in millimetres, so it prints at a true 1:1 scale. This is the one real piece of engineering here: `width="210mm"` in SVG is a physical unit, which browsers and printers both convert from millimetres, so a 10mm cell really prints as 10mm. Pixels would mean gambling on the printer’s DPI — the same file prints three times larger on a 300dpi machine than on a 96dpi one. Since the entire purpose is printing something to write on, the unit has to be millimetres. Choose “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”, when printing. The latter scales the content to fill the sheet, and the cell size stops being accurate — which is why people often find their grid comes out wrong. The internal lines of the writing grids are dashed: they are guides rather than cell boundaries, and solid lines would compete with the border for attention — which is also how printed practice books do it.
Features
- Five kinds: square grid, ruled, dot grid, tian and mi writing grids
- Millimetre sizes that print at a true 1:1 scale, not approximately
- A4, A5 and Letter
- Cell size from 3 to 40 mm
- Adjustable margin, leaving room for the printer’s non-printable area
- Adjustable line and frame colours (lighten the lines to save ink)
- The grid is centred on the sheet, with the leftover split evenly rather than pushed to one side
- Exports SVG, so it prints as clean vectors
How to use
- Choose the paper and the style
- Set the cell size in millimetres and the margin, watching the preview
- Adjust the line and frame colours if you want
- Click Download .svg, then print at Actual size
FAQ
- The printed cells are the wrong size. What went wrong?
- Nine times out of ten the print dialog is set to “Fit to page” or “Scale to fit”, which scales the content to fill the sheet and therefore rescales the cells. Choose “Actual size”, “100%” or “No scaling” instead. Also check that the paper setting matches the paper you chose — printing A4 content onto Letter shifts the cells by a few percent. With both of those right, a 10mm cell prints as 10mm.
- Why millimetres rather than pixels?
- Because a pixel has no definite printed size. CSS traditionally treats `1px` as 1/96 inch, but printers interpret the pixel counts in an SVG according to their own DPI, and not consistently — the same `width="794"` file is exactly A4 wide on a 96dpi machine and about a third of A4 on a 300dpi one. `width="210mm"` is a physical length that every device converts the same way. Since this tool exists to be printed, the unit has to be millimetres.
- What is the difference between the tian and mi writing grids?
- The tian grid divides a square into four with one horizontal and one vertical centre line, showing where the character’s centre is and which quarter each stroke should occupy. The mi grid adds both diagonals on top of that, giving eight reference lines and a tighter constraint on where strokes start and end. Practice books use both: tian grids for younger beginners (simple, unobtrusive) and mi grids for older students or calligraphy (more precise). This tool offers both, with dashed internal lines, because they are guides rather than boundaries.
