One amount per line: pick a rate and a direction to get the net amount, the tax and the gross amount, with totals when several lines are entered. The step people get wrong is going backwards from a gross amount: you divide rather than multiply. ``` net = gross ÷ (1 + rate) tax = gross ÷ (1 + rate) × rate ``` At 13%, a gross of 113 gives a tax of 13 and a net of 100. The wrong way, `113 × 13% = 14.69`, gives a net of 98.31 instead. Both figures look plausible; only an invoice or a return will show they do not reconcile. The result states this. Choose from common rates or enter your own. Everything runs in your browser.

Features

  • Net, tax and gross listed on separate rows, so the tax is ready for an invoice
  • ⚠️ Backwards uses gross ÷ (1 + rate) × rate, and the result says so
  • Common rates: 5% / 6% / 9% / 10% / 13% / 15% / 16% / 19% / 20% / 21% / 25%
  • Any custom rate can be entered instead
  • One amount per line, with totals across three columns for multiple lines
  • Amounts are handled in whole cents and always shown with two decimals
  • Runs entirely in your browser

How to use

  1. Pick the tax rate, or choose custom and type a value
  2. Pick the direction: net to gross, or gross to net
  3. Paste one amount per line; several lines are totalled automatically

FAQ

Why not just multiply by the rate going backwards?
Because the gross amount already contains the tax, and the base is the unknown net amount, not the gross. Divide the gross by (1 + rate) to get the net, then multiply by the rate for the tax. Multiplying directly overstates the tax: at 13%, 113 yields 14.69 instead of 13.
Does a round trip give the same number?
Yes, but rounding to the cent can shift the result by one cent. That is unavoidable once amounts are settled in cents, not a fault in the arithmetic.
Which country uses 13%?
13% is one of the general VAT rates in China. The common rates are collected here, but which one applies to a given good or service is set by tax law — pick what applies to you, or enter a custom rate.
