Rotate by 90° or 180°, mirror left-right or up-down, and handle the EXIF orientation tag properly. That tag is worth spelling out: when you hold a phone upright, the sensor does not turn, so the pixels are actually landscape and the camera merely writes a "rotate 90° for display" tag into the file — which is why the same photo looks upright in software that reads the tag and lies on its side in software that does not. Browsers now apply that step while decoding, so the point here is not to do it twice: the tool works out whether the orientation has already been applied, adds nothing when it has (and says so), and only applies it itself when a browser has not. The output is newly encoded with no orientation tag, so the classic "rotated once, rotated again elsewhere" problem cannot happen. The orientation step and your chosen angle are composed and resampled once, so quality is only lost once rather than twice. Everything runs locally and nothing is uploaded.
Features
- EXIF orientation handled exactly once — never missed, never applied twice
- Manual rotation by 90°, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise
- Mirror left-right (selfies) or up-down
- Orientation and manual rotation are composed into a single resample, so quality is not lost twice
- Keeps the original format, or forces JPEG, PNG or WebP
- The output is a new file with no EXIF — which also clears location and camera settings
- Reports which orientation was corrected, or says there was no tag to correct
- Nothing is uploaded and no server is involved
How to use
- Drop an image in
- It is auto-corrected from EXIF by default
- Add a rotation or mirror if you need one
- Download the result
FAQ
- Why is the image still sideways after I rotate and save?
- If you have seen this in other software, the usual cause is that its "rotate" only rewrote the EXIF orientation tag instead of the pixels. As soon as something ignores that tag — a web page, a chat preview, some older software — the image lies back down. The file this tool produces is re-encoded: the pixels really have been turned, and no orientation tag remains, so it is upright everywhere.
- Why are my selfies mirrored?
- A front camera mirrors the preview so you see yourself as in a mirror, which is easier to frame with, but some phones save the photo unmirrored and some save it mirrored — so the same selfie comes out opposite ways on different devices. To get "how other people see you", mirror left-right once. To get "how you look in the mirror", leave it alone.
- Does rotating lose quality?
- The rotation itself only rearranges pixels; the loss comes from re-encoding. PNG and lossless WebP are exactly lossless, and JPEG is re-encoded at quality 92. Note that quarter turns involve no interpolation at all — every pixel lands on an integer coordinate — so sharpness is untouched. Arbitrary angles would need resampling, which is why this tool only does 90° steps.
- Is the image uploaded?
- No. Rotation uses the browser's own canvas and the file is read with File, entirely in local memory. The image never leaves the machine, and it keeps working offline.
