Airport Distance Calculator
LookupsEverything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded
One leg per line gives the great-circle distance between two airports (all three units at once) and a flight time estimate. The distance is the shortest line on a sphere rather than the flown route: real flights avoid closed airspace, follow one-way airways and ride the winds, so the route mileage is usually a little longer. ⚠️ The flight time is distance divided by cruise speed plus a fixed 30 minutes for taxi, climb and descent, with different speeds by aircraft. Real block times vary with routing, winds and congestion, and 20% off is normal — do not use it to catch a flight. ⚠️ The airport table is downloaded on the first query (a few hundred kilobytes) and does not weigh down the page; unknown codes are named and close matches offered. Everything runs in your browser.
Features
- One leg per line, in IATA or ICAO codes
- Kilometres, miles and nautical miles for every leg
- Flight time estimate with a speed per aircraft type: turboprop, regional, narrow-body, wide-body
- Total distance and total flight time across several legs
- Distance uses the spherical great circle (mean radius 6371.0088 km)
- The flight time is labelled an estimate: 30 fixed minutes on the ground, and 20% off is normal
- Unknown codes are named, with close matches offered
- ⚠️ The airport table loads on first query, not with the page; everything runs locally
How to use
- Write one leg per line, such as `PEK LHR`
- Pick the distance unit (this only orders the three units)
- Pick an aircraft type, which sets the cruise speed
- Add more lines for more legs and a total distance
FAQ
- Why does the airport data take a moment?
- Because the table has over nine thousand airports and a few hundred kilobytes, and it is downloaded on the first query so that every page does not carry it. The cost is a brief wait the first time, after which it is cached.
- How accurate is the flight time?
- It is an estimate. It uses great-circle distance divided by cruise speed plus a fixed 30 minutes for taxi, climb and descent, while real block times vary with routing, winds aloft, diversions and congestion — 20% off is normal. It is useful for comparing routes roughly, not for planning a connection.
- Is this the actual flown distance?
- No. This is the great-circle distance, the shortest line between two points on a sphere. Real flights avoid closed airspace, follow one-way airways and meet headwinds or tailwinds, so the flown mileage is usually longer and so is the block time.
- What if a code is not found?
- The tool says the code is not in the table and offers close matches. This table keeps only airports with an IATA code, so airports with only an ICAO or local code are absent. That is a limit of the data rather than a mistake in your input.
